Ryōtei Namimura

Namimura(料亭 波むら

traditional food | tōkyō | eat | enjoy

Among the bustling atmosphere of downtown Tokyo lies Namimura, a gateway to an atmosphere of relaxation and tradition. Namimura is a ryōtei, or exclusive traditional restaurant, which dedicates itself to the comfort of its customers as well as the high standard of Japanese traditional cuisine. Those who have never visited a ryōtei often have difficulty hiding their excitement as they pass through the main gate and are greeted warmly by the highly trained staff. The hospitality shown toward customers is an example of omotenashi おもてなし, or the Japanese standard of hospitality, and is taken very seriously at these establishments.

One subtle but important example of this sense of hospitality are the various decorations to be found. Namimura boasts several flower arrangement displays that were prepared by famous artists. For those who have trouble with traditional Japanese floor seating, the recently renovated wing has seats with a sunken area to rest one's feet, just as you would at a table. The seats are also equipped with backs to make it easier to sit for long periods without getting tired. Such small points as these are the kind of attention to detail that can be found at Namimura. Everything from food and decoration to the conduct of the waitresses and the okami 女将, or head-waitress, have been completely thought through in order to bring the highest degree of satisfaction to the customer. In addition, Namimura makes every effort to adapt to the customers needs, and has made itself very flexible in responding to special food-related requests. This kind of painstaking attitude is one of the first impressions that Namimura makes. When visiting, it is also possible to request geisha to dance and serve drinks.

Namimura is a place for luxury and relaxation. Its careful effort to appeal to all five senses immediately sinks in upon setting foot through the door, and the traditional atmosphere makes one wonder if this was how the ancient feudal lords spent their nights hundreds of years ago.

Atmosphere

The relaxing rooms in the newly renovated wing feature sunken areas to rest one's feet. Each room is named after characters from "The Tale of Genji", a classic Japanese literary work.

Private Rooms

These private rooms, named shōfū 松風 are a reconstruction of the ancient teahouses created by the famous shōgun Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The delicate woodworks seen in the ceiling are reminiscent of that era, and create a relaxing and serene atmosphere.

Quality

Each room makes use of Akita Cedar, an extremely high quality wood that is said to improve with age and attain more "flavor".

Geisha

In addition to the food and atmosphere, Namimura boasts a special entourage of geisha that provide entertainment for the patrons. Their traditional dances and shamisen 三味線 performances are the finishing touch giving Namimura an traditional atmosphere all its own, and make for an unforgettable experience.
